"This person would have had to have materialized out of thin air. The only way he could have gotten onstage was to have entered through the fire-escape door. Had he done that, the alarm would have gone off. We checked it thoroughly."

"But what if he had tampered with the alarm? And then quickly fixed it?"

"An expert checked that alarm. It hadn't been touched in years."

"When Rindy was backing away from me, she was moving this way and that. How can you be so sure what angle she was shot from?"

The captain leaned against the wall. "You're sharp, Melanie. The answer is, we can't be a hundred percent sure. It's feasible someone in the right cul-de-sac could have done it."

"Jeramie," she whispered.

"Feasible, but very unlikely. He was at least thirty degrees off the coroner's calculated angle. Then we have the same problems we had with the other alternative. You would have had to have handled both the villain's gun and bullet. Not to mention that after our Mr. X did all these amazing things, he would have had to have disappeared."

Melanie rested her head in her hands. She had been hoping this close scrutiny would uncover an explanation that would clear her of any responsibility. Was she that selfish? Rindy was dead and she was worried about herself. Yet nothing could be done for her friend.

/ would have been your friend. Can you hear me?

The tears were there before she realized it. The captain waited patiently while she wept them. He was a good man. She had been wrong to snap at him. "So I guess it was my fault, then?" she said finally.

"This was opening night. You were excited, and having fun. How could you expect to notice the difference in shells?"
